At Han Mi Martial Arts in Damascus, MD, we teach more than just techniques—we instill confidence, discipline, and a strong sense of ethics. A few years ago, an unexpected encounter at our school reminded me why these values matter. Today, I’m sharing this story to show what sets our approach to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, and Kendo apart, and why choosing the right martial arts school is so important for you and your family.

An Unexpected Challenge

One Saturday, after teaching classes and cleaning the dojo with a student and his father (a local police officer), two young men entered our waiting area. One of them boldly declared that he thought what I taught was “nonsense” and challenged me to a fight, claiming he was a top student at another nearby school. He was visibly nervous but insisted on a “no-rules” self-defense scenario.

As a martial artist and teacher, I faced a choice. I could have dismissed him—after all, those with true skill rarely seek conflict. But I saw an opportunity to teach a lesson, not just to him, but to everyone present. With security cameras rolling and a police officer nearby, I agreed to a controlled engagement, using only Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to ensure his safety.

The encounter unfolded like a classic Gracie Challenge. I let him approach, evaded his strikes, and used leverage to clinch, pull guard, and sweep him to the ground. In moments, I secured an Americana submission. We reset, and in the second round, I took his back, warning him of a choke. He tapped out quickly. Afterward, I hugged him, praised his courage (while questioning his wisdom), and explained why his approach was risky. He left with a new perspective—and so did I.

What This Taught Me

This experience reinforced three principles that define Han Mi Martial Arts:

  • Self-Defense is About Control, Not Harm: Using Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I subdued the young man without striking, proving that effective self-defense prioritizes safety and restraint. Our curriculum, taught in partnership with Mastery Jiu-Jitsu in Leesburg, VA, equips students with practical skills for real-world scenarios, no matter their size or strength.
  • Ethics Shape the Martial Artist: The young man’s challenge stemmed from a lack of guidance on when and why to fight. At Han Mi, we teach a clear code of ethics:
  • Be devoted to the greater community.
  • Be respectful of parents, siblings, and teachers.
  • Use good judgment before harming any living thing.
  • Cultivate an indomitable spirit.
  • Be dedicated to your dojang and always finish what you start.
These values ensure our students grow into responsible, confident individuals.
  • Family Involvement Matters: Parents play a vital role in their child’s martial arts journey. By staying engaged—asking questions, attending classes, or even training alongside their kids—families reinforce the values we teach. This incident reminded me that some students lack this support, which can lead to misguided actions.

Why Choose Han Mi Martial Arts?

Not all martial arts schools are the same. Some focus on competition or flashy techniques, while others may lack the depth needed for true self-defense. At Han Mi, we prioritize the science of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, ensuring every technique is practical and precise. Our commitment to safety is unmatched: we never leave students alone with staff, maintain security cameras throughout the dojo, and background-check every team member. These measures create a trusted environment where families can thrive.
As I told the young man, choosing a school that teaches both skill and character is critical. At Han Mi, we’re not just training martial artists—we’re building better people.
